The Pace Gallery announces with sadness the death of Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona at the age of 88. A titan of twentieth-century European art and a Spanish national treasure, Tàpies explored an enormous range of materials, imagery, and scale in his work, with a breadth and vibrancy that did not fade over his almost seven-decade career.
“It has been a great privilege to have known and worked with Antoni Tàpies,” said Douglas Baxter, president of The Pace Gallery. “In addition to being an extraordinary person and artist, his influence on subsequent generations of artists, while sometimes underestimated in the United States, has been profound and will no doubt continue for years to come.”
